Chapter Summary

Chapter 39 describes a visit to King Hezekiah by envoys from Babylon. Hezekiah, fully recovered from a recent illness, proudly shows them all his royal treasures, his vast storehouses of silver, gold, spices, precious ointments, and his entire armory. The prophet Isaiah later confronts Hezekiah, questioning him about the visitors and what he revealed to them. Isaiah then delivers a stark prophecy: because of Hezekiah's display of wealth, a future day will come when all these treasures, and even some of his own descendants, will be carried off to Babylon and forced into servitude. Hezekiah's surprising response shows relief that this disaster will not happen during his own lifetime, implying that he values peace and security in his own days more than the long-term future of his kingdom or descendants. This chapter serves as a crucial bridge, setting the stage for the later prophecies of the Babylonian exile.
