Nahum

The book of Nahum is a powerful prophetic message primarily directed at Nineveh, the capital city of ancient Assyria. Assyria was known for its cruelty and had been a major oppressor of God’s people, Israel and Judah, for many years. Nahum’s name means “comfort,” and while the book announces a fearsome judgment against Nineveh, it brings comfort and hope to Judah, assuring them that their oppressor will be destroyed. The prophet describes God as a mighty, just, and avenging sovereign who will surely punish wickedness but is also a refuge for those who trust in Him. It’s a vivid picture of divine justice being brought against a proud and brutal empire.
