Chapter Summary

Chapter 37 of Isaiah tells the dramatic story of Jerusalem's deliverance from the powerful Assyrian Empire. King Hezekiah of Judah receives a threatening letter from Sennacherib, the Assyrian king, who has already conquered many lands and boasts that no god can save Jerusalem. Overwhelmed and fearful, Hezekiah tears his clothes, puts on sackcloth, and seeks guidance from the prophet Isaiah. Hezekiah prays earnestly to God in the Temple, acknowledging God's unique power and appealing for rescue. Through Isaiah, God reassures Hezekiah, promising that Sennacherib will not enter Jerusalem and will be turned back. God declares that He will defend the city for His own honor and for the sake of David. True to God's word, an angel of the Lord strikes down a massive number of Assyrian soldiers overnight. Sennacherib retreats in disgrace to his capital, Nineveh, where he is later assassinated by his own sons. The chapter highlights God's sovereignty, His direct intervention in human affairs, and His faithfulness to protect His people when they turn to Him in prayer.
