Chapter Summary
Isaiah Chapter 34 describes God's furious judgment against all nations, especially focusing on Edom (also called Idumea). The chapter paints a vivid picture of widespread destruction, where armies are wiped out, the land is soaked with blood, and even the heavens seem to collapse. This severe punishment is described as God's vengeance for the wrongs done to Zion. The land targeted for judgment will become a permanent, burning wasteland, fit only for wild animals and birds of prey, serving as a lasting sign of God's complete and final wrath.
Bible:Essence Verses
- Listen closely, everyone on Earth – all countries and their people. Pay attention, because this message is for the whole world and everything living in it.
- Because the Lord is fiercely angry with all the nations and their armies. He has decided to completely destroy them, giving them over to be killed.
- Their dead bodies will be thrown out and left to rot, and a terrible stench will rise from them. So much blood will be spilled that it will seem like rivers of blood melting the mountains.
- Even the stars in the sky will fade away, and the heavens themselves will roll up like a piece of paper. All the heavenly bodies will drop, just like a leaf falling from a grapevine or a ripe fig dropping from its tree.
- My sword, prepared in heaven, will be brought down. Look, it will strike Edom, the people I have cursed, to bring them to justice.
- The Lord's sword will be drenched with blood, thick with the fat from rams, lambs, and goats. It's like the Lord is preparing a great sacrifice in Bozrah, leading to a huge killing spree throughout the land of Edom.
- Even powerful wild oxen, young bulls, and mighty bulls will be destroyed alongside them. Their land will be completely drenched with blood, and the soil itself will become rich with the fat of the slain.
- This is the day when the Lord will get his revenge, the year when He will pay back everyone who opposed Zion and troubled His people.
- The rivers in that land will turn into burning tar, and its soil will become like fiery sulfur. The whole country will become a blazing inferno of tar.
- This fire will never go out, day or night; its smoke will rise forever. The land will stay ruined for all generations to come, and no one will ever travel through it again.
- Instead, only birds like the cormorant, the bittern, the owl, and the raven will live there. God will measure it out with a line of chaos and stones of emptiness, ensuring it remains a desolate ruin.
- People will call for its leaders to take charge of the kingdom, but no one will be found. All its important people will simply vanish, becoming nothing.
- Thorns, stinging nettles, and thorny bushes will grow in its royal palaces and strong fortresses. It will become a home for wild beasts and a dwelling place for owls.
- Wild creatures from the desert will meet with other wild animals. Mythical goat-like creatures will call out to each other there. The night owl will also settle down and find a quiet resting spot for herself.
- The great owl will make her nest there, lay her eggs, hatch her young, and protect them under her wings. Vultures will also gather there, each with its partner.
- Look into the Lord's scroll and read: not one of these things will be missing, and none of these creatures will lack a mate. For God Himself has commanded it, and His Spirit has brought them all together.
- He has divided the land for them by lot, measuring it out with His own hand. They will own it forever, and they will live in it for all time to come.
