Chapter Summary
This chapter of Isaiah describes a powerful and complete judgment from God that will devastate the entire world. It paints a picture of widespread destruction and emptiness, where everyone, no matter their social status, will experience the same suffering. The land itself is described as polluted by human sin, leading to a curse that wipes out most of its inhabitants and silences all joy and celebration. Despite this massive destruction, a small group of survivors will emerge, praising God's majesty from distant places. The chapter concludes by looking forward to a future day when God will punish all powerful beings, both heavenly and earthly, and establish His glorious rule on Mount Zion, shining brighter than the sun or moon.
Bible:Essence Verses
- Look, the Lord is going to make the entire Earth empty and ruined. He will twist it completely around and scatter everyone living on it.
- It won't matter who you are – regular people or priests, servants or their masters, maids or their mistresses, buyers or sellers, those who lend money or those who borrow it, even those who charge interest or pay it – everyone will face the same fate.
- The land will be totally stripped bare and completely wasted away, because the Lord Himself has declared this will happen.
- The whole world is sad and withering, losing its strength. Even the proudest people on Earth are becoming weak and fading away.
- The planet itself is stained and corrupted by the people living on it, all because they disobeyed God's rules, twisted His commands, and shattered His timeless promise.
- That's why a curse has consumed the Earth, leaving everyone who lives there feeling empty and lonely. As a result, many people on Earth will be consumed by fire, and only a tiny handful will survive.
- The fresh wine is sad, the grapevines are withering, and all the people who used to be cheerful now just sigh.
- The happy sound of tambourines will stop, the shouts of joyful people will end, and the cheerful music of harps will fall silent.
- No one will sing while they drink wine, and even strong alcoholic drinks will taste terrible to anyone who tries them.
- The disorganized city is falling apart; every house is sealed shut so no one can enter.
- People cry out for wine in the streets; all happiness has vanished, and the fun has completely left the land.
- Only emptiness remains in the city, and its main entrance gates are smashed and ruined.
- When these things happen across the land and among the people, only a few will be left, like the olives that fall off a tree when you shake it, or the last few grapes picked after the main harvest is over.
- Those few survivors will raise their voices, singing praise for the Lord's amazing greatness, shouting His name even from places far across the ocean.
- So, honor the Lord, even through hard times, and glorify the name of the Lord, the God of Israel, in all the islands and coastal regions.
- From the farthest corners of the Earth, we've heard songs, praising God's glory for those who are good. But I (Isaiah) thought, 'Oh, I am worn out, so worn out, how terrible for me! The people who betrayed others have kept on betraying, yes, those who are deceitful have been terribly deceitful.'
- Terror, deadly traps, and hidden snares await you, everyone who lives on this Earth.
- And here's what will happen: anyone who runs away from the scary sounds will fall into a pit; and if they manage to climb out of the pit, they'll get caught in a snare. This is because the sky's floodgates have opened, and the very ground beneath the Earth is trembling.
- The Earth is completely shattered, totally falling apart, and violently shaking.
- The Earth will sway back and forth like someone who has had too much to drink, and it will be swept away like a flimsy tent. Its sins will be a heavy weight upon it, and it will fall down, never to get back up.
- And on that day, the Lord will punish the powerful spiritual beings in the heavens above, as well as the kings ruling here on Earth.
- They will all be rounded up, like prisoners thrown into a dungeon, and locked away in a jail. After a very long time, they will finally face judgment.
- Then the moon will look confused, and the sun will appear dim, because the Lord Commander of everything will rule gloriously from Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, shining brightly before His chosen elders.
