Chapter Summary

Chapter 20 describes a dramatic prophetic act by Isaiah. God commands Isaiah to remove his special prophet's garment and his sandals, walking around without clothes and shoes for three years. This unusual behavior serves as a powerful visual message: just as Isaiah is exposed and vulnerable, so too will the powerful nations of Egypt and Ethiopia (Cush) be captured and paraded away by the Assyrian king. They will be taken as prisoners, stripped of their dignity and possessions, bringing great shame. The chapter concludes with the fearful reaction of the people in the surrounding regions, like Judah, who had placed their hope for protection against Assyria in these very nations, now realizing their supposed saviors are helpless.
