Chapter Summary
This chapter presents a serious message, or "burden," from God through the prophet Isaiah concerning Babylon. It describes God's coming judgment against this powerful nation, which would eventually conquer Judah. The prophecy announces a terrible "Day of the Lord" when God will gather an army of foreign nations, specifically the Medes, to completely destroy Babylon. The chapter vividly portrays the horror and despair of that day, with cosmic disturbances, widespread death, and extreme cruelty from the invading forces. Ultimately, Babylon, once magnificent, will be reduced to an uninhabited wasteland, a place where only wild animals and demonic creatures will dwell, serving as a permanent example of divine wrath.
Bible:Essence Verses
- This is a serious message about Babylon that God showed to Isaiah, the son of Amoz.
- Raise a signal flag on a tall mountain! Shout out to them! Wave your hand to direct them to enter the strong city gates of the powerful leaders!
- I have given orders to my specially chosen warriors. I have also summoned my strong ones to carry out my anger—those who are proud to serve my greatness.
- Listen! There's a loud sound of many people in the mountains, like a huge crowd! It's the confused uproar of many nations and kingdoms gathering together. The Lord, the Commander of all armies, is assembling his forces for battle.
- They are coming from a distant land, from the very edge of the sky. It is the Lord himself, bringing the tools of his fury, to completely wipe out the entire country.
- Cry loudly in despair! Because the Lord's special day of judgment is almost here. It will arrive like a crushing devastation from God, who holds all power.
- Because of this, everyone's hands will go limp, and every person's courage will disappear.
- They will be terrified. Sharp pains and deep sadness will grip them. They will suffer agonizing pain, like a woman giving birth. They will stare at each other in shock, their faces burning red with fear.
- Watch out! The Lord's special day is coming. It will be a cruel day, full of rage and intense fury, meant to turn the land into a wasteland. He will utterly remove all wicked people from it.
- Because the stars in the sky and their groups will not shine. The sun will become dark as it rises, and the moon will not reflect its light.
- I will bring punishment upon the world for its wickedness, and on evil people for their wrongdoing. I will put an end to the arrogance of the boastful and humble the pride of the cruel.
- I will make people so scarce that a single person will be worth more than the purest gold, even more valuable than a famous gold nugget from Ophir.
- Because of this, I will make the skies tremble, and the earth will be moved from its foundations, due to the furious anger of the Lord, the Commander of all armies, on his day of intense wrath.
- They will be like a frightened deer being hunted, or like a sheep no one gathers. Everyone will try to return to their own people and escape to their own homeland.
- Anyone discovered will be stabbed through. And everyone found alongside them will die by the sword.
- Their children will be violently smashed to pieces right before their eyes. Their homes will be plundered, and their wives will be sexually assaulted.
- Look! I am going to provoke the Medes to attack them. These Medes will not care about silver, and they won't be tempted by gold.
- Their bows will crush young men to death. They will show no mercy to unborn babies, and they will not spare any children.
- Babylon, once the most magnificent kingdom, the proud jewel of the Chaldeans, will be utterly destroyed, just like God completely wiped out Sodom and Gomorrah.
- It will never be lived in again, nor will people settle there for future generations. Arab nomads will not set up their tents there, and shepherds will not build pens for their flocks there.
- Instead, desert animals will rest there. Their homes will be filled with mournful creatures, owls will live there, and goat-like demons (satyrs) will dance.
- And hyenas will howl in what were once their grand houses, and jackals will cry out in their luxurious palaces. Babylon's destruction is coming soon; its time is short.
