Chapter Summary
Psalm 44 is a lament from the community of Israel, expressing profound distress and confusion. It begins by recalling God's mighty acts of deliverance for their ancestors, emphasizing that past victories were solely due to God's power and favor, not human strength. However, the psalm quickly shifts to a desperate cry, describing their current situation of defeat, humiliation, and suffering at the hands of their enemies. They feel abandoned by God, scattered, and made a mockery among nations. Despite this intense hardship, the people declare their unwavering faithfulness to God, insisting they have not forgotten Him or broken their covenant. The psalm concludes with an impassioned plea for God to "awake," intervene, and redeem them, appealing to His mercy and reminding Him of their loyalty even in suffering.
Bible:Essence Verses
- Oh God, we’ve personally heard the accounts our parents and grandparents shared about the incredible things you did in ancient times, back in their generation.
- They told us how you used your power to drive out other nations and then settled our people in their place; how you brought trouble upon those other peoples and sent them away.
- This wasn't because our ancestors conquered the land with their own weapons, nor did their own strength rescue them. Instead, it was your strong hand, your powerful arm, and your radiant presence that helped them, because you looked favorably upon them.
- You are my King, God; please command a way out for Jacob’s descendants.
- With your help, we will push back our enemies; in your name, we will crush those who stand against us.
- I will not depend on my bow for victory, nor will my sword save me.
- But it was you who rescued us from our adversaries and put to shame those who hated us.
- We proudly speak of God all day long, and we will praise your name forever and always. (Pause)
- Yet now, you have pushed us away and disgraced us; you no longer accompany our armies into battle.
- You make us turn and run from our foes, and those who despise us take our possessions as loot.
- You have handed us over like sheep destined for the butcher, and you have scattered us among foreign nations.
- You have sold your people for very little, and you haven't profited or grown richer from their low price.
- You have caused our neighbors to mock us, making us a target of scorn and laughter for everyone around us.
- You have turned us into a negative example among other cultures, something people shake their heads at.
- My shame is constantly before me, and my face is covered with humiliation.
- This is because of the insults and hateful words from those who speak badly of us; because of our adversaries and those seeking revenge.
- All this trouble has come upon us, yet we have not forgotten you, nor have we broken our agreement with you.
- Our hearts have not turned away, nor have our steps strayed from your path.
- Even though you have crushed us terribly in a dangerous wilderness, and covered us with the shadow of death.
- If we had forgotten our God’s name, or reached out our hands to worship a foreign god;
- Wouldn’t God discover it? For He knows the secret thoughts of every heart.
- Indeed, it is because of you that we are constantly facing death; we are treated like sheep waiting to be slaughtered.
- Wake up! Why do you seem to be asleep, Lord? Get up! Don't cast us away forever.
- Why do you hide your presence and forget our suffering and the oppression we face?
- Because our very being is brought low to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground in despair.
- Rise up to help us, and rescue us because of your unfailing kindness.
