Chapter Summary

Chapter 43 describes the famine continuing to grip the land, forcing Jacob's family to seek more food from Egypt. Jacob initially refuses to let Benjamin go, remembering the loss of Joseph and Simeon. However, Judah passionately pleads with his father, guaranteeing Benjamin's safety and taking full responsibility, arguing that they will all perish if they do not act. Jacob finally relents and instructs his sons to take the best local products as a gift for the powerful Egyptian official, along with double the money, including the silver mysteriously returned in their sacks from their previous trip. The brothers, now with Benjamin, travel back to Egypt and present themselves to Joseph. Joseph is deeply moved upon seeing Benjamin, his full brother, and privately weeps before composing himself. He then arranges a grand meal where he seats his brothers in their precise birth order, astonishing them, and shows special favor to Benjamin by giving him a portion of food five times larger than anyone else's. The chapter concludes with the brothers eating and drinking merrily with Joseph, still unaware of his true identity.
