Chapter Summary

Genesis Chapter 36 provides a detailed record of Esau's family line, also known as Edom. It outlines his wives, their children, and the various clans and tribal leaders (dukes) that descended from him. The chapter also describes the original inhabitants of the land Esau settled, called the Horites, and lists their leaders. Finally, it presents a succession of kings who ruled in Edom before the Israelites had their own monarchs. This chapter essentially establishes the origins and initial leadership structure of the Edomite nation, which originated from Esau, Jacob's brother.

  1. This section presents the family origins and descendants of Esau, who was also known as Edom.
  2. Esau married women from the Canaanite people: Adah, the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Aholibamah, who was the daughter of Anah, and Anah herself was the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite.
  3. His third wife was Bashemath, who was Ishmael’s daughter and the sister of Nebajoth.
  4. Adah gave birth to Esau's son, Eliphaz; and Bashemath became the mother of Reuel.
  5. Aholibamah bore him Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah. These are all the sons of Esau who were born to him while they lived in the land of Canaan.
  6. Esau gathered his wives, his sons, his daughters, everyone in his household, his livestock, all his other animals, and everything he had acquired in Canaan, and moved away from his brother Jacob into another country.
  7. They had accumulated too much wealth and too many animals to continue living together in the same area, as the land where they were temporarily residing couldn't support all their possessions and herds.
  8. So, Esau made his permanent home in the mountainous region of Seir. Esau is the same person as Edom.
  9. Here is the complete family lineage of Esau, who became the founder of the Edomite people, while he lived in the mountainous region of Seir.
  10. These are the names of Esau’s sons: Eliphaz, born to his wife Adah, and Reuel, born to his wife Bashemath.
  11. Eliphaz had five sons: Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.
  12. Eliphaz, Esau’s son, also had a secondary wife named Timna, and she bore him a son named Amalek. These children are all considered the descendants of Esau’s wife, Adah, through her son Eliphaz.
  13. Reuel’s sons were Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These were the children of Esau’s wife, Bashemath.
  14. And these were the sons born to Esau by his wife Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah, who was the daughter of Zibeon: Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah.
  15. These men became the clan chiefs among Esau's sons. From Esau's firstborn son, Eliphaz, came the chiefs Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Kenaz.
  16. Also from Eliphaz came the chiefs Korah, Gatam, and Amalek. These were the tribal leaders who came from Eliphaz in the territory of Edom, all belonging to the line of Adah's sons.
  17. The sons of Reuel, Esau’s son, also became clan chiefs: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These were the tribal leaders who descended from Reuel in the land of Edom, all part of Bashemath, Esau’s wife's, lineage.
  18. The sons of Aholibamah, Esau’s wife, who became chiefs were Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah. These were the tribal leaders from Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah, Esau's wife.
  19. These are the descendants of Esau, who is also known as Edom, and these are the names of their respective clan leaders.
  20. These are the sons of Seir the Horite, who were the original inhabitants of that land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, and Anah.
  21. Also Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These men were the clan chiefs of the Horite people, the family of Seir, who lived in the territory of Edom.
  22. Lotan’s children were Hori and Hemam; Lotan also had a sister named Timna.
  23. Shobal’s children included Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.
  24. Zibeon’s children were Ajah and Anah. This Anah was the one who, while tending his father Zibeon's donkeys in the wilderness, discovered warm springs.
  25. Anah’s children were Dishon, and Aholibamah, who was Anah’s daughter.
  26. Dishon’s children were Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran.
  27. Ezer’s children were Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan.
  28. Dishan’s children were Uz and Aran.
  29. These were the clan chiefs who came from the Horites: Chief Lotan, Chief Shobal, Chief Zibeon, Chief Anah,
  30. Chief Dishon, Chief Ezer, and Chief Dishan. These were the leaders who emerged from the Horite clans within the mountainous region of Seir.
  31. Here is a list of the kings who ruled in the land of Edom before the Israelites ever had any kings of their own.
  32. Bela, son of Beor, reigned in Edom, and his capital city was named Dinhabah.
  33. After Bela died, Jobab, son of Zerah from Bozrah, became king in his place.
  34. When Jobab passed away, Husham, from the land of the Temanites, succeeded him as king.
  35. After Husham died, Hadad, son of Bedad, became the next king. He was known for defeating the Midianites in a battle fought in the fields of Moab. His city was named Avith.
  36. Once Hadad died, Samlah from Masrekah took his place as king.
  37. After Samlah died, Saul from Rehoboth-on-the-River became king.
  38. When Saul passed away, Baalhanan, son of Achbor, reigned instead.
  39. After Baalhanan, son of Achbor, died, Hadar became king. His city was Pau, and his wife's name was Mehetabel, who was the daughter of Matred, a descendant of Mezahab.
  40. These are the names of the clan chiefs descended from Esau, organized by their families, the places they settled, and their individual names: Chief Timnah, Chief Alvah, Chief Jetheth,
  41. Chief Aholibamah, Chief Elah, Chief Pinon,
  42. Chief Kenaz, Chief Teman, Chief Mibzar,
  43. Chief Magdiel, and Chief Iram. These were the Edomite chiefs, named according to where they made their homes in the land they possessed. This is Esau, the ancestor of the Edomite people.
