Chapter Summary
Genesis Chapter 35 marks a significant turning point in Jacob's life. Following a divine command, Jacob leads his family to Bethel, where God first appeared to him. Before their journey, Jacob instructs his household to purify themselves and discard all foreign idols. At Bethel, God reaffirms His covenant with Jacob, officially changing his name to Israel and repeating the promises of numerous descendants and the land of Canaan. The chapter also records the sorrowful death of Rachel, who dies giving birth to Benjamin, and the burial of Deborah, Rebekah's nurse. It concludes with a list of Jacob's twelve sons, a troubling account of Reuben's sin, Jacob's reunion with his aged father Isaac, and Isaac's eventual death and burial by his sons, Esau and Jacob. This chapter highlights God's continued faithfulness to His covenant people, even amidst personal tragedies and moral failings within Jacob's family.
