Chapter Summary
Chapter 32 finds Jacob on his journey back to Canaan after many years with Laban. He first encounters God's angels, which reassures him. However, his main concern is reuniting with his brother Esau, whom he had wronged years ago and feared might seek revenge. Jacob sends messengers to Esau, but they return with the alarming news that Esau is approaching with 400 men. Filled with immense fear, Jacob prays earnestly to God, reminding Him of His promises and asking for protection. He then implements a clever strategy: he divides his family and possessions into two groups, hoping that if one is attacked, the other might escape. He also sends a substantial gift of animals ahead in multiple waves, hoping to calm Esau's anger. Finally, alone by the Jabbok River, Jacob wrestles all night with a mysterious figure. This encounter results in Jacob's hip being dislocated, but also in a new name—Israel—signifying his struggle and triumph with both God and people. Jacob names the place Peniel, recognizing he has seen God. He continues his journey, limping but transformed.
