Chapter Summary

Chapter 30 of Genesis details the intense rivalry between Jacob's wives, Rachel and Leah, as they compete to bear children for him. When Rachel remains barren, both women resort to giving their personal maidservants (Bilhah and Zilpah) to Jacob to have children on their behalf, further increasing his family. The chapter records the births of several more sons—Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun—and a daughter, Dinah, before God finally remembers Rachel and allows her to conceive Joseph. Following Joseph's birth, Jacob decides it's time to leave his uncle Laban's service and return home. A new agreement is struck for Jacob's wages, involving the selective breeding of Laban's flocks based on coat patterns. Through clever and perhaps supernatural means involving patterned rods, Jacob successfully manipulates the breeding process, accumulating vast wealth in livestock and servants, much to Laban's chagrin.
