Chapter Summary

Genesis Chapter 29 describes Jacob's journey to the land of his uncle Laban. At a well, he meets his cousin Rachel, Laban's younger daughter, and is immediately drawn to her. Jacob is welcomed into Laban's home, where he expresses his desire to marry Rachel. He agrees to work for Laban for seven years to earn her hand. After this period of service, Laban tricks Jacob by substituting his elder daughter, Leah, at the wedding. Jacob confronts Laban, who then agrees to give Rachel to Jacob a week later, provided Jacob commits to serving another seven years. Jacob marries Rachel, but his love for her is much greater than his love for Leah. God observes Leah's unhappiness and blesses her with children, while Rachel remains unable to conceive. Leah gives birth to four sons: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, each name reflecting her hopes and feelings about her challenging marital situation.
