Chapter Summary

Chapter 27 of Genesis tells the dramatic story of how Jacob, with his mother Rebekah's help, tricked his elderly and blind father Isaac into giving him the special blessing meant for his older brother, Esau. Isaac, believing he was speaking to Esau, requested a specific meal of wild game before bestowing his final, powerful blessing. Rebekah, overhearing this, orchestrated a plan: she prepared a similar meal from the flock and disguised Jacob with Esau's clothes and goat skins to simulate Esau's hairy arms. Jacob presented himself as Esau, received the coveted blessing, which included promises of power, abundance, and leadership over his brothers. Shortly after Jacob departed, the real Esau arrived with his hunted game, only to discover the deception. His deep anguish and Isaac's realization of what had occurred led to a secondary, lesser blessing for Esau, foreshadowing a life of struggle and eventual rebellion. Esau vowed to kill Jacob after their father’s death, prompting Rebekah to send Jacob away to her brother Laban in Haran for his safety.
