Chapter Summary

Deuteronomy Chapter 26 outlines two important rituals for the Israelites once they settle in the promised land: the offering of firstfruits and the declaration of the third-year tithe. First, it instructs them to bring the very first part of their harvest to a central place of worship. There, they are to present it to a priest and recite a historical prayer, remembering how God delivered their ancestors from slavery in Egypt and brought them to a prosperous land. This act is a way to express gratitude and remember God's faithfulness. Second, the chapter describes a similar declaration to be made every third year, after setting aside a special tithe to support the Levites, foreigners, orphans, and widows. The person giving the tithe must confirm before God that they have distributed it correctly and not misused any sacred items. The chapter concludes with a powerful reminder of the covenant relationship, where Israel commits to obeying God's commands with all their heart, and God affirms Israel as His special, holy people, promising them honor among all nations.

Bible:Essence Verses
  1. Once you arrive in the land the LORD your God is giving you to keep as your inheritance, and you have taken ownership and made it your home;
  2. You must take some of the first crops harvested from your land – the land the LORD your God is providing you – put them in a basket, and bring them to the special place the LORD your God will select as His dwelling.
  3. You will go to the priest serving at that time and declare to him, 'Today, I confirm before the LORD your God that I have arrived in the country the LORD swore to our ancestors He would give us.'
  4. The priest will take the basket from your hands and place it in front of the altar belonging to the LORD your God.
  5. Then you will speak before the LORD your God, saying, 'My ancestor was an Aramaean, almost dying. He traveled to Egypt with just a small group of people and lived there. But while there, he grew into a vast, powerful, and numerous nation.'
  6. 'The Egyptians treated us terribly, making our lives hard and forcing us into harsh slavery.'
  7. 'But when we called out to the LORD, the God of our ancestors, the LORD listened to us. He saw our suffering, our hard work, and how we were being crushed.'
  8. 'So, the LORD brought us out of Egypt using His great strength and power, showing mighty and terrifying deeds, and performing many miraculous signs and wonders.'
  9. 'He has now led us to this very spot and given us this land, a land so rich and plentiful it's like milk and honey flowing freely.'
  10. 'Look! I have brought the first crops from the land You, O LORD, have provided me.' You will present this offering before the LORD your God and bow down to worship the LORD your God.
  11. Then you will celebrate all the good things the LORD your God has given to you and your family – you, along with the Levites and any foreigners living among you.
  12. Every third year is the year for a special tithe. After you have finished setting aside and distributing all the tenth-part contributions from your harvest and income for that year – giving them to the Levites, the foreigners, the orphans, and the widows – so they can all eat their fill in your towns,
  13. Then you will declare before the LORD your God, 'I have removed the sacred portions from my home and given them to the Levites, the foreigners, the orphans, and the widows, exactly as You commanded me. I have not disobeyed Your rules, nor have I ignored them.'
  14. 'I haven't eaten any of this offering while I was sad or grieving. I haven't set aside any of it for impure purposes, nor have I offered it for the dead. Instead, I have carefully listened to the voice of the LORD my God and have done everything You instructed me to do.'
  15. 'Look down from Your holy dwelling place, from heaven, and bless Your people Israel. Also, bless the land You have given us, just as You promised our ancestors – a land that is overflowing with milk and honey.'
  16. Today, the LORD your God is giving you these rules and decisions. So, you must obey and follow them with your whole heart and all your being.
  17. Today, you have declared and confirmed that the LORD is your God. You have promised to live according to His ways, to keep His laws, His commands, and His decisions, and to always listen to His voice.
  18. And today, the LORD has declared and confirmed that you are His own special people, just as He promised you, and that you are to keep all His commands.
  19. This is so He can lift you high above all other nations He has created, giving you fame, reputation, and honor. In this way, you will become a holy people dedicated to the LORD your God, exactly as He has said.
