Chapter Summary
Chapter 39 describes Joseph's experiences in Egypt after being sold into slavery. He is purchased by Potiphar, a high-ranking Egyptian official. Because God is with Joseph, everything he does prospers, and Potiphar quickly promotes him to manage his entire household. Joseph excels in this role, and God blesses Potiphar's home for Joseph's sake. However, Joseph, who is very handsome, catches the attention of Potiphar's wife. She repeatedly tries to seduce him, but Joseph, demonstrating strong moral character and fear of God, consistently refuses her advances. One day, when they are alone, she grabs him, demanding he lie with her. Joseph flees, leaving his cloak in her hand. Infuriated, Potiphar's wife falsely accuses Joseph of attempted assault. Potiphar, believing his wife, becomes enraged and throws Joseph into the king's prison. Despite this unjust imprisonment, God remains with Joseph, showing him kindness and granting him favor with the prison warden, who soon places Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners and the daily operations of the jail.
