Chapter Summary
Isaiah Chapter 11 describes the future arrival of a special leader, often understood as the Messiah, who will come from the family line of King David. This leader will be filled with God's Spirit, possessing extraordinary wisdom, understanding, and power to judge with perfect fairness, especially for the poor and vulnerable. His reign will usher in an amazing era of peace, where even wild animals will live harmoniously with each other and with humans, and all creation will be safe because the world will be full of the knowledge of God. The chapter also foretells a time when God will gather His scattered people, both Israel and Judah, from all corners of the earth, ending their rivalries and clearing all obstacles for their grand return to their homeland.
Bible:Essence Verses
- A new shoot will sprout from the ancient family tree of Jesse (King David's father), and a fresh branch will grow from his roots.
- The very Spirit of the Lord will rest upon him—a spirit giving him deep wisdom and sharp understanding, clear counsel and great strength, thorough knowledge and a profound respect for the Lord.
- This Spirit will make him quick to grasp what it means to honor the Lord. He won't make decisions based only on what his eyes see or what his ears hear.
- Instead, he will judge the poor with perfect justice and speak up fairly for the humble people of the land. His powerful words will strike the earth like a weapon, and with just a command from his lips, he will put an end to the wicked.
- Justice will be wrapped around him like a strong belt, and truthfulness will be the firm sash around his waist.
- In that time, wolves will live peacefully with lambs, and leopards will rest beside young goats. Calves, young lions, and healthy cattle will all be together, and a small child will gently lead them.
- Cows and bears will graze side-by-side, and their young ones will lie down together in harmony. Even mighty lions will eat plants, just like oxen do.
- A baby who is still nursing will play safely near a cobra's hole, and a toddler will reach into a viper's nest without any harm.
- Nothing will cause injury or destruction anywhere on my holy mountain, because the whole earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord, just as the oceans are covered by water.
- On that special day, a descendant from Jesse will stand as a rallying flag for all people; nations will come seeking him, and the peace and security he provides will be truly magnificent.
- And it will happen in that future time that the Lord will once again reach out His hand to bring back the remaining portion of His people who are still left in places like Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Cush, Elam, Shinar, Hamath, and from all the distant islands of the sea.
- He will raise a signal for all the world's nations and gather the exiled people of Israel, bringing together the scattered members of Judah from every corner of the planet.
- The jealousy between Ephraim (the northern tribes) will disappear, and Judah's rivals will be eliminated. Ephraim will no longer be envious of Judah, and Judah will no longer trouble Ephraim.
- Instead, they will swoop down like birds of prey on the Philistines to the west; together they will take valuable things from the people in the east. They will conquer Edom and Moab, and the people of Ammon will obey them.
- The Lord will completely dry up the tongue-shaped gulf of the Egyptian sea. With a mighty wind, He will wave His hand over the great river, splitting it into seven shallow streams, allowing people to cross on dry ground.
- A smooth, clear path will be made for the rest of His people, those who remain from Assyria, just like there was for Israel when they came out of Egypt long ago.
