Chapter Summary

Chapter 42 introduces the "Servant of the Lord," a chosen figure who will gently but firmly bring justice and truth to the entire world, including distant nations. God then affirms His own unique identity as the sole Creator, declaring that He will not share His glory with idols. He promises to act powerfully and decisively, like a fierce warrior, to bring about new things and guide those who are spiritually lost. However, the chapter then turns to address the spiritual blindness and deafness of Israel, God's own people and servant, explaining that their disobedience has led to their suffering and captivity. It ends with a challenge for them to listen and understand the consequences of ignoring God's ways.

Bible:Essence Verses
  1. Look at my special helper, the one I support; he is my chosen one, and I am truly pleased with him. I have placed my Spirit on him, and he will bring what is right and fair to people all over the world, even those who aren't part of Israel.
  2. He won't shout, raise his voice, or make a public spectacle in the streets.
  3. He won't snap a broken reed, nor will he put out a flickering candle wick that's barely smoking. Instead, he will genuinely establish what is just and real.
  4. He will not grow weak or lose heart until he has firmly planted justice across the entire world; even far-off nations will eagerly await his instruction.
  5. This is what the Lord God says—the one who made the skies and spread them wide, who formed the earth and everything that grows on it, who gives breath to everyone alive and spirit to all who live there:
  6. I, the LORD, have called you for a good and proper purpose. I will hold your hand and protect you. I will make you a special agreement for my people and a guiding light for all other nations.
  7. Your job is to open the eyes of those who cannot see, to free captives from their jails, and to lead those living in spiritual darkness out of their confinement.
  8. I am the LORD; that is my specific name! I will not share my greatness with anyone else, nor will I let carved statues receive the honor that belongs only to me.
  9. Look, the events I foretold earlier have now come true. And now I am announcing completely new things; I tell you about them before they even begin to happen.
  10. Sing a fresh song to the LORD! Let His praise ring out from every corner of the earth—you who travel the oceans and everything living in them, you who live on distant islands!
  11. Let the desert regions and their towns raise their voices in song, along with the settlements where the people of Kedar live. Let those who dwell among the rocks sing out, and let them shout praises from the mountaintops!
  12. Everyone should give honor to the LORD and tell of His greatness in all the island territories.
  13. The LORD will march out like a strong hero, full of fierce determination, like a warrior ready for battle. He will shout, yes, he will roar, and he will conquer those who oppose him.
  14. For a long time, I kept quiet; I held myself back and stayed silent. But now, I will cry out like a woman giving birth! I will completely destroy and consume everything in one swift move.
  15. I will turn mountains and hills into barren land, causing all their plants to wither. I will change rivers into dry beds, and I will empty out the water sources.
  16. I will guide those who are blind along routes they didn't know, leading them down paths they've never walked. I will turn the darkness in front of them into light and make rough places smooth. I promise to do these things for them and will never abandon them.
  17. Those who rely on carved idols and declare to metal statues, 'You are our gods!' will be forced to retreat and will feel deep shame.
  18. Listen up, you who are deaf! Open your eyes, you who are blind, so you can finally see!
  19. Who is more blind than my own servant? Or more deaf than the messenger I sent? Who is as blind as the one I made complete, as blind as the LORD's servant?
  20. You see many things, yet you don't truly pay attention; your ears are open, yet you don't actually hear.
  21. The LORD was happy to act in accordance with His own perfect fairness. He wanted to make His law great and worthy of honor.
  22. But this nation has been robbed and plundered. They are all caught in traps and hidden away in jails. They have become easy victims, with no one to set them free, no one to say, 'Give them back!'
  23. Who among you will really listen to this? Who will pay attention and learn for what is yet to come?
  24. Who handed over Jacob to be stolen from, and Israel to be attacked by robbers? Was it not the LORD Himself, the very one against whom we have rebelled? It happened because they refused to follow His paths and would not obey His teaching.
  25. Because of this, God poured out the full force of His anger upon them, along with the power of war. It surrounded them like a fire, yet they didn't realize it; it consumed them, yet they didn't take it seriously.
