Chapter Summary
Isaiah 51 is a powerful message from God, designed to encourage and reassure His people, particularly those in exile, that He remembers His promises. It urges them to recall their humble beginnings with Abraham and Sarah and to trust in God's mighty acts of salvation from the past. The chapter emphasizes that while the physical world and human life are temporary, God's justice and rescue are everlasting. God questions why they fear mortal enemies when He, their all-powerful Creator, is their true comforter. The chapter then includes a plea from the people for God to intervene as He did long ago, followed by God's firm assurance that He will restore Jerusalem, end her suffering, and turn His anger onto those who oppressed her.
Bible:Essence Verses
- Listen to me, all of you who are striving to do good and are searching for the Lord. Remember the solid rock from which you were carved, and the deep quarry from which you were dug out.
- Think about your ancestor Abraham, and Sarah, who gave birth to you. I called him when he was just one person, and I greatly blessed him, making his family grow into many.
- Because the Lord will surely bring comfort to Zion, His holy city. He will soothe all her ruined areas, turning her empty lands into a place as lovely as Eden, and her dry wilderness into a beautiful garden planted by the Lord. Happiness and delight will be discovered there, along with shouts of thanks and sounds of joyful music.
- Pay close attention to me, my people; listen carefully to me, my nation. For guidance will flow out from me, and I will establish my justice to shine like a beacon for all people.
- My justice is drawing near; my deliverance has begun its journey, and my strong power will bring judgment to the nations. Distant lands will eagerly anticipate my coming, and they will place their confidence in my mighty strength.
- Raise your gaze to the skies above, and then observe the ground beneath you. For the heavens will disappear like a puff of smoke, and the earth will grow old and worn out like a piece of clothing; all who live upon it will also perish in the same way. However, my rescue will endure forever, and my justice will never be canceled.
- Listen to me, all of you who recognize what is right, you people who hold my teachings deep within your hearts. Do not be intimidated by the scorn of other humans, nor should you be frightened by their mean comments.
- For just like a moth consumes a piece of clothing, and a worm devours wool, so will they be completely destroyed. Yet, my justice will stand for all time, and my deliverance will continue through every age.
- Wake up, wake up! Show your strength, O mighty power of the Lord! Rouse yourself, as you did in times long past, in the generations of old. Weren't you the one who struck down Rahab, a name for Egypt, and wounded the sea monster?
- Weren't you the one who made the ocean dry, dividing the vast deep waters, creating a path through the sea's depths so your liberated people could walk across?
- Therefore, those whom the Lord has set free will come back, arriving with songs of praise in Zion. Eternal happiness will be their crown; they will grasp delight and cheerfulness, and all sadness and grieving will vanish far away.
- It is I, yes, I myself, who brings you comfort. Why would you be so fearful of mere mortals who will eventually pass away, and of human beings who are as short-lived as a blade of grass?
- And you have forgotten the Lord, your Creator, who stretched out the heavens and established the earth's foundations! You've lived in constant fear, day after day, because of the rage of your tormentors, as if they were prepared to wipe you out. So tell me, where is the tormentor's rage now?
- The imprisoned exile is rushing, eager to be set free so he won't perish in the dungeon, and so he won't run out of food.
- However, I am the Lord your God, the one who parted the sea when its powerful waves were roaring. His name is the Lord of Heavenly Armies.
- And I have placed my message within your mouth, shielding you under the protection of my hand. I do this so I can arrange the cosmos, establish the earth's base, and declare to Zion, 'You belong to me!'
- Wake up, wake up! Rise to your feet, Jerusalem! You have consumed from the Lord's hand the chalice filled with His blazing anger; you have gulped down the bitter remains from the cup of terror, squeezing out every last drop.
- Among all the children she has given birth to, there is no one to direct her; nor is there anyone to take her by the hand from all the sons she has nurtured.
- These two awful misfortunes have struck you: utter ruin and widespread destruction, combined with starvation and attacks by weapons. Who is left to grieve for you? And by whom can I bring you any solace?
- Your people have collapsed, exhausted; they lie motionless at the intersections of all the roads, tangled like a wild ox caught in a snare. They are completely overwhelmed by the blazing wrath of the Lord, the severe warning from your God.
- Therefore, pay attention now, you who are suffering and reeling, as if intoxicated, but not from drinking wine:
- This is what your Sovereign Lord, the Lord, declares – your God who champions His people's case: 'See, I have removed from your grasp the cup of staggering fear, even the bitter sediment from the goblet of my intense anger. You will never have to drink it again.'
- Instead, I will place that very cup into the hands of those who torment you. These are the ones who demanded of you, 'Get down on the ground, so we can march across!' and you were forced to lay your body flat like pavement and a walkway for them to tread upon.
