Chapter Summary
Psalm 39 captures the deep internal struggle of someone (likely David) who initially decides to stay completely silent, even about good things, to avoid saying anything wrong, especially around those who don't respect God. However, this silence only makes his inner pain grow, until his emotions can no longer be contained. He then prays, asking God to help him understand how short and fragile human life is, realizing that everything people strive for on earth is temporary and ultimately pointless. He places all his hope in God, confessing his own wrongdoings and asking for relief from God's hand of discipline. He acknowledges that God’s correction makes human strength fade like a moth-eaten garment.
