Chapter Summary

Psalm 51 is a heartfelt prayer of deep confession and repentance, traditionally attributed to King David after his sin with Bathsheba and the murder of Uriah. In this psalm, David pours out his soul to God, acknowledging his profound wrongdoing and seeking divine mercy and cleansing. He recognizes the seriousness of his sin against God alone, expresses a desire for inner purity and spiritual renewal, and pleads for God to restore the joy of salvation and not withdraw His presence or Holy Spirit. The psalm concludes with David's commitment to teach others God's ways once restored, and an understanding that true worship involves a broken and repentant spirit, not just outward sacrifices.

Bible:Essence Verses
  1. God, please show me your incredible kindness; according to your boundless compassion, wipe away all the wrong things I've done.
  2. Wash away completely the unfair actions I've committed, and make me spotless from my missteps.
  3. Because I know full well the bad choices I've made; my sin is always in front of me, a constant reminder.
  4. It was against you, and only you, that I committed this wrong, doing evil right where you could see it. This shows that you are completely right when you speak about justice, and totally fair when you make judgments.
  5. You see, I was born with a tendency to do wrong, and my mother conceived me when I was already destined for sin.
  6. You truly desire honesty and truth deep inside a person; so, in the most hidden parts of my being, show me how to be wise.
  7. Cleanse me using a purifying herb like hyssop, and I will truly be clean; wash me thoroughly, and I will become brighter than freshly fallen snow.
  8. Let me hear sounds of happiness and celebration again, so that my spirit, which you have felt like it's broken, can find joy once more.
  9. Turn your gaze away from my mistakes, and erase every single one of my wrongdoings.
  10. God, create a pure heart within me, and put a steadfast, good spirit back inside me.
  11. Don't ever push me away from your presence, and please don't take your Holy Spirit from me.
  12. Bring back the happiness I once had because of your rescue; and keep me strong with a willing and generous spirit.
  13. Then, I will teach people who have gone astray how you want them to live, and others who have made bad choices will turn back to you.
  14. God, my rescuer, save me from the guilt of this life taken; then my tongue will sing out loud about your righteousness and fairness.
  15. My Lord, please help me speak; then my mouth will share all your praises.
  16. For you don't really want me to bring an animal sacrifice; if you did, I would offer it. You don't take pleasure in burnt offerings anymore.
  17. The offering God truly desires is a humbled and sorry spirit; a humble and truly repentant heart, God, you will never reject.
  18. In your kindness, do good things for your city, Zion; rebuild the defenses of Jerusalem.
  19. Then you will be pleased with sacrifices offered in the right way, with whole burnt offerings and complete offerings; then they will present bulls on your altar.
